January 1st 1840
As the new year passes, small wars play themselves out across the world. In Scotland English force have begun a slow drive up the lowlands, having defeated the main Scottish army in a series of grueling battles throughout the North of England (the Irish foreign ministry was unavailable for comment). Meanwhile, in Syria Ali Pasha's armies are enjoying much more success, rapidly pushing Ottoman forces back and approaching the border to Turkey Proper.
In Italy a new Italian nationalist group have started activities in some of the republics in the North-west. So far there have only been a comically under-planned attempt to destroy the house of government, and a more successful attempt at burning down a minor police post. The Italian canton in Switzerland remain peaceful, for reasons entierly apart form every able bodied man being alread fighting somewhere we're sure.
Prussia and Russia have recently agreed to an alliance to "preserve and restore the historic balance of power and territory in the Baltic and the Germanies". It's unclear if they're actually serious, or this is just a goad at the Swedes.
In Western Germany, meanwhile, several of the smaller southern states have sent petitions to France and Austria, asking for protection from the Brass Baron "terrorizing the lands and inciting anarchy among the peasantry"
In Africa two empires, one ancient and one brand new, stare at each other across the desert, each with dreams of expansion.
In Asia, China, in reaction to the effect the new taxes imposed by Singapore, has sent Ling Zex, a noted reformist, to oversee the end of the opim trade as governor of Canton. He has banned the sale of Opium, and is demanding that all British traders turn over their supplies and sign a bound swearing not to sell it, the breaking of which is punishable by death. the Foreign ministries of Japan and Singapore are watching the situation carefully, to see if war breaks out between the two titans of Asia.
Across the Pacific, in the America's tensions are again on the rise between Avalonia and Mexico, with a border skirmish on the Texas-Louisiana border only stopped form escalating by remarkably cool heads on those in command of the border posts.
Meanwhile in Argentina a surprising peace still endures. Anyone want to take a bet on how long that's going ot last?
And in the far north is the dictatorship of Iceland. IF they don't want a war with someone, then they're very good actors.
Lurking in the shadows in the mysterious Shadows of Samuel, apparently taken straight form the nightmares of monarchs everywhere, they're a group of well funded anarchists dedicated to the death of kings.
What will happen? who will die? no-one knows, but one thing everyone does know is this There Will BE WAR
(apologies for my poor writing skills and shameless use of cliches)

France to Japan They're theoretically interested, but are curious what goods you have that make a voyage from France or Algeria to Japan profitable England to Japan all commerce from the Indies is under the purview of the BEIC Spain to Japan they're defiantly interested in trade, although they're as too what exactly your looking ot trade Sayn Internally or externally?
Internally the situations pretty rosy at the moment, although there's discontent among the colonial elite about the unorthodoxy of the popular Confraternity of Saint Joseph (a philipine religious order)
Externally it's quite well defended, and occupying garrisoned archipelago's is never exactly what you'd call a picnic

The East India Company has nothing but respect for the sovereignty and laws of all nations. However, for the Qing government to make such demands of the East India Company…to turn over our wares, which were, quite recently, legitimate goods…and to force restrictions on the freedom of trade and the market…this is an intimidation against Company sovereignty. We are quite willing to be reasonable, however, and can only hope the Qing Chinese are, as well. We propose that representatives of both the Company and the Qing can meet on this matter, that we may reach a resolution that is beneficial to all parties, as well as being enforceable. If the Qing insist on the banning of opium, however, we must likewise insist that, due to our respect for the laws of other nations, we be given the right to take into custody and put on trial British smugglers who defy the Viceroy's mandate. After all, the justice systems of our nations are radically different, and doing differently may provoke petty disputes over cases that could otherwise be avoided. I am, sirs, your humble servant, Lord Zadkiel Moore, Governor-General of the East India Company, Viceroy of the Indian Territories
We would like you to tell your gentlemen within the regional governments to protest to their superiors, citing the difficulty of enforcing a full opium ban. Ask them to recommend, simply, heavier monitoring of its sale and distribution, paving the way for an eventual ban that will be easier to enforce.
Furthermore, increase your presence along the southern border. There will be friends waiting just across it.
Regards, Your Benefactor
Your instructions are simple: the opium trade is illegal in China, so don't sell it in China. Sell it everywhere else. A particularly ideal port would be Hai Pong ((just across the border from China)). Feel free to sell your wares to the locals. But, ideally, work with them. Sell them the opium, and ask them, in turn, to sell it to some of our friends in China.
We are always happy to trade with other nations. We will begin sending our merchants as soon as is appropriate.

Brass Barony of EstorThe Brass Barony sends out countless letters to the various small German states, as well as Prussia. The letters read thusly: My fellow Germans, have no fear. The Barony, at present, has no intention of annexing or vassalizing any German state. We also will take great pains to guarantee the independence of those states, and any foe who seeks to conquer Germany will have us to fight.
We will preserve the independence of the various German peoples. All we ask is that the peasants be granted a little bit more freedom. This can even take the form of pointless and useless freedoms. The Barony only thinks that a slightly freer populace is a more obedient populace.
We urge you not to turn to France or Austria. Do you so fear us that you would turn to a foreign overlord? If it helps change your mind, I will use my marvelous Brassmen to persuade the peasants to stay under your control.
Warm Regards, Baron Augustine von Estor
Estor to France We urge you to not accept any request of protection from the German princes. Your forefathers tried to rule over the Germans, and those knaves rebelled against their rule. The Germans are not worth ruling, take it from us.
Furthermore, we would like to purchase some of your colonial holdings. What colonies are too troublesome and poor for you to bother with any longer?
Regards, The Baron von Estor.
Estor to Egypt A warm greetings to you, Ali Pasha. I am Baron Augustine von Estor of the Barony of Estor, and I am interested in your struggle against the Ottomans. The Barony could profit from the fall of the Turk in the Levant.
So, we would like to give you a mercenary company of Estorian soldiers, along with a few of our renowned Brassmen. Your scientists and philosophers and so forth will not be allowed to study the Brassmen, but we would be happy to send a Brassmith to begin teaching your best minds.
In return, we would like safe passage of troops and materials across the Suez, for colonization purposes in Asia.
Regards, The Baron von Estor.
Hospitaller Protectorate Prestigious and zealous Knights, the Barony of Estor has heard that you have advanced medical practices. How would you like a trade? Brass mechanical men to defend Malta, in return for the Barony receiving the medical knowledge.
Warm regards, The Baron von Estor
Estor to EIC/India You recall our deal? Help me colonize Southeast Asia, and I provide technology for you, as well as regulars from the colonies I create?
Let's start immediately.
Estor to Abyssina How would you like a trading deal with us? We get a lower (if not abolished entirely) tax on goods and soldiers moving through your territory, in return for knowledge of advanced medical practices.
Does the Barony's deal seem agree to you?
Estor to Sweden When shall we undertake the agreement discussed earlier?

Union d'Italia OvestThe Count sat at his desk, reading over a trade document from some minor state or the other. A knock on the door interrupted him. "Come in," he said, not taking his eyes off his work. The door swung open. "Good day, Count." The count lifted his gaze to the speaker. He was a shortish man, with medium length, oiled back hair. "Ah," Luccio said, almost undetectably false warmth spreading into his voice, "Baron Cippriani, what a surprise. What brings you?"The baron drew in his breath, as if what he was about to say pained him. "The state of Tolentino will join your Union, Count.""Excellent. I'll fill out the papers." replied Luccio, smile still laboriously glued to his face. The baron nodded haughtily and left the room. The Count let out a deep breath and collapsed onto his desk. What a repulsive little man, he thought. I don't know why my father trusted him so much.So yeah, I continue to diplomatically or militarily capture city states to the west. We would be happy to open trade relations with mighty Japan.

The news of uprisings in the Western Republics is treated with grave importance in the Doge's Palace. The failure of these groups is good, but their existence hints at another player on the scene. To this effect, a small group of Lion Knights are sent to "Advise" the local forces in how to best combat this uprising. At the same time, the Doge deploys Masked Knights to the region in the hopes of uncovering evidence as to the reasons for these attacks. At the same time, Venice attempts to shore up support amongst the populace of the region, some funds are appropriated to improve the local infrastructure. Concerning International Affairs We would gladly trade with you, Expect our Vessels to arrive shortly. Also a warning between friends, we would advise you against dealing with the East India Company. They dominated India and introduced the deadly drug of Opium to China, what makes you think they will not do the same to you. Respectfully Yours The Republic of Venice

IcelandMessage to all nations of the world: Greetings from the Military State of Iceland. We wish to make our intentions to the world clear. We are essentially neutral as we have no opinion of right or wrong and will only be involved in conflict at another's request. Unlike our Swiss brothers we will not sell our services to both sides of the conflict but will remain true with our original employers till the contract is either fulfilled or broken by the employer. When you employ our nation you can be sure that we will fight by your side with more strength then any of your allies. At the end of the contract we will go our separate ways and will again be willing to be hired by anybody who can afford our price. Let this be understood by all, when this nation fights against you it only does so because others have paid for our aid with money, technology, trade goods, or even land. Sincerely Governor General Rangar Livvson. Ireland We are most interested in any business so close to home, shall we send a representative to work out the details or would you prefer to meet here?

Abyssinian EmpireThe wise queen of Sheba reborn, the grand empress, sat in her grand golden throne, protected from the heat, here in the grand hall of white marble and sandstone. "And sign those for me, then bring them over here for sealing. Heat the wax as well."On way or the other, the coming months would be very, very interesting, she thought.Abyssinia to Japan: To the wise and noble emperor of Japan
We are indeed interested in trade, offering agricultural products, rare woods and goods, coffee and mineral resources.
Abyssinia to Switzerland: The Empress has two offers for the swiss cantons:
a) The empress is very interested in hiring an elite swiss guard. b) More importantly, the empress is ready to match and exceed any offer the swiss should receive to help egypt and syria, or any of their allies. They will hire mercenary companies to defeat egypt if such an offer can be made.
Abyssinia to the Brass Barony: To the noble Baron of Estor
It has come to the empress' ears that the Barony of Estor wishes to support Egypt and Syria in their war against the ottoman empire. As a direct neighbour, it is not in Abyssinia's interest that Egypt becomes too strong. Instead, we would like to make you a counter-offer: withdraw your offer of help to Egypt, and instead send your brass men to the Ottomans, helping them defeat Syria and Egypt once and for all. Once the Suez region and the entire red Sea is under Abyssinian control, we will offer you free passage and very, very favourable trade privileges.
Abyssina to the British East India Company Greetings to the leadership of the East India company.
As we all know, egyptian ambitions not only threaten the stability of the entire near east, they also endanger the red sea route to asia, as the egyptians demand outrageous taxes, chocking this very life-line of the east-west trade. Would it not be in the interest of the BEIC, therefore, to remove this troublesome regime and install one more benevolent, looking more favourably upon the needs of these modern ages? Abyssinia is willing to offer you trade privileges and open passage through the red sea and the Suez region in exchange for your support in such an endeavour.
Abyssinia to the Ottomans Hail to the Ottoman Sultan.
The Sultan and the Empress have a common enemy, the Pasha of Egypt and Syria. His ambitions know no bounds. Therefore, the empress is gathering allies to remove this troublesome warmonger, and install a new regime in egypt, one supporting stability, peace and trade. Or, to make it short: we sign an alliance, defeat Syria and Abyssinia gets egypt and the Sinai. Do with the rest as you please.

SingaporeJapanIt would be in the interest of both our nations to conduct trade. At this point in time, we would be more than willing to establish the same trade agreements with your nation as we have with any other nation using our ports.
However, I feel that we can benefit from one more than we can from other nations. I ask you, how do you feel about the Europeans taking lands deeper and deeper into Asia, and the increasing problems between China and Britain?
- King Wangba Dan of Singapore puppyavengerThey called her Lady. Born from a Russian general and a prostitute from Hong Kong, her life was meant to be that of a street rat. Somehow, the woman now sat in the second highest position to the King of Singapore. She was a ragtag beauty, her dark red-black hair and tanned skin glistened in the lamplight as she finished reading the King's orders. The three spies were to be sent to India to see what they could find out about the British East India Company's intentions. King Wangba Dan had dealt with too many of the whites in the past to underestimate their strength, and their ambition. To the King, and therefore to the Lady, it was not a matter of if the British would attempt to destroy them, but when, and how.

Kingdom of SwedenThe alliance between Prussia and Russia is news indeed. However, not necessarily bad news. The Council is busy today, as the King has called a long meeting to discuss the new direction the state shall take in the changing world. Before swords fly the words, as usual. To Ireland We are of course willing to trade, if the prices are right. It only helps us all prosper. To Iceland Shall we proceed with what we've planned? Get ready, for fortune favours those fast enough to grasp it. To Brass Barony Indeed, as long as you don't share the benefits with anyone else, we should proceed with both the action and the trading agreement as soon as possible. Quick results will often prove the cheapest and with little chance of escalating. I shall contact those we talked of about the other things we discussed. To Japan Getting ready should be done quickly, it seems. Like an old Chinese strategist said, cutting off the ties of words before drawing swords and spilling blood is key to a quick and painless victory. To France There are certain powers in Germany who are working towards unification. It is in both our interests to prevent that kind of an event, but the recent alliances between Prussia and Russia, a powerful outside force, seem to me to be a prelude for such ambitions. Gathering our strength for now, but we would like to know if you would be willing to, directly or indirectly, back us up in a decisive move should the situation develop in such a direction. To Russia I understand your need for guarantees in such troubled times, but I'm confident that the calm heads leading such a mighty state as yours will realize the need to refrain from any uncalled-for aggressive actions. Of course that is our own policy aswell, for the region. To Austria There is a dangerously powerful group of anti-monarchy lunatics, as I'm sure you are aware. Of course, the only real solution is to root them out with extreme prejudice, but since they operate within nations and without borders, we will need cooperation in order to succeed at that. Most important is the removal and prevention of such disease from spreading into our own nations.
We know we have much to learn from you, and would be grateful of your cooperation in this most important of matters. The Swedish offer engineers for a moderate fee to help with large construction and mining projects. The methods employed by the Swedes are much more effective and much less dangerous than those used before, and are bound to speed up the project and profit their employers.
