Well, since the GiTP thread is getting to be 50 pages long (and thus going to be locked) I figured we should discuss puppy's idea for a steampunk Total War here.
Firstly, Puppy, I know you already said what year it will be set in, but you should post it again here.
Second, what style will it be? Like the Girl Genius comic? Like normal Total war, but with old-school tech? Or something different?
Third, I don't know much about the Victorian age. Who will be the major NPC nations?
Lastly, how will stats work? Same as normal TW, or with a twist?
So, let us discuss.

Also, do we have cartridge weapons, or still muskets and the like? Also, since this is still the time of armies with colory uniforms, dibs on red.

Well, I'd imagine that the British will have the exclusive rights to red unless puppy says otherwise. And I'm curious about the same things as Rationalgoblin just mentioned.

Okay, to recap, it starts in 1840, turns are six months long.
As I said in the old thread, it's post Napoleonic, but only just. So yeah, cartridge weaponry and brightly colored regiments fighting wars of maneuver.
Major NPC's, if they're wnot destroyed or take over as a result of PC choices.
France Austria (notably not Hungary, still a unitary German state) Brittan Prussia Russia Mexico China ....etc?
For tech, at start there will be..well anyone play Age of Legends? you cna get steam-punk equivalent of most of the low-tech stuff for the vinci faction at start if you've got a good enough tech.
Speaking of which, tech goes something like this
1. Maori tribes 2. Quing China 3. Brittan in real-life 1840's, plus a few dozen people capable of making some modest steampunk things, brass men with very limited intelligence, gyro-copters and suchlike. 4. As above, but with a much broader range of inventions, as well as some weird and fairly impossible things, steam-horses, primitive and small mecha with steam-powered meachine guns and so on. 5. As above, but you'll have a much easier time getting new discoveries (so you'd get the above mentioned mecha faster then the guy with a 4)

As to airships... sigh, very well.
So, instead of airships, can I have a fleet of ironclads (that were actually effective as a large battle/trading force)

Alright, so you mentioned on GiTP that there won't be armies of supertech-born creations to begin with.
Can I still have a few hidden "brass men" to act as crude assassins/urban fighters? I think I can justify seeming to have armies, if my Baron uses trickery to disguise his human troops, making them look like men made of brass.
Also, I'm taking whatever color looks like bronze or brass.

Sure, I mean your a successor to the British Empire, a huge, cutting-edge navy is perfectly reasonable.
Why are you signed in as a guest out of curiosity?

I posted the start of my nation in the Archives....are silencered revolvers ok? beings how colt made the revolver popular in 1936...and as for my heavy weapons the good old .600 Nitro Express round?...yes sorry bit a gun nut. it goes like this (nation): A shady group with heavy ties to the Illuminati. nobody knows where they come from but rumors say they come from the lower part of Ingolstadt where they have one of there secret headquarters.
The group is supposedly run by a man named Johann Adams however nothing is know about this man or even if he is real
Very little is known about the group other then they formed sometime after the Order of the Illuminati, they have be suspescted in countless assassinations, and several major world events up to this date.
Whenever one nation or person is on the brink of finding something about the Shadow the disapear or the trail goes cold, needless to say the Shadow is very sinister and very good at what they do.
Strengths: Very good Intelligence (Spies) and even better at staying hidden Their Tech is limited towards stealth and weaponary, and is less then average overall Despite their extreme low F0 the do tend to instil fear in many leaders, and poeple They are funded by several wealthy lords whose identities are not know
Weakness: They have and extremely low FO due to their nature, and reputation The have a little group of Assassian/Spies that makes up their "military"

Sorry, single-shot only at game start.
Really, if you have any questions about tech, if it was avaliable in the 1840's then you can definitely have it, and anything else you can get if it's steam-punkish and you have the tech.
Other then that..Well how much of the write-up is propaganda? remember Morse telegraphs are only three years old, world-spanning conspiracies aren't really that practical.

So I'm thinking either Italy or something with North Africa.

That should be fine, just don't totally unite Italy (got to leave angry liberals something to revolt over) Besides, what sort of 19th century doesn't have wars over Italian and German unification?

Okay then, Italy south of Rome, plus Corsica and Sardinia, as well as a bit along the western shore line more northerly.

That would be fine.
